The class:
This class is an opportunity to create cohesiveness within the Theatre
Department and between the Theatre Department and the campus community. It gives
us the opportunity to create a second tier of production to complement our
mainstage shows. We affectionately refer to these productions as
SPEW (Student
Produced
Extracurricular
Work). We
believe that one of the best ways to learn is through doing. SPEW gives the
Theatre Department an extra limb beyond the mainstage. We have put hundreds of
people into the role of perfomer as well as director, stage manager, light
designer, playwright and more in the 7 years since our first bill of one acts.
Besides SPEW
we also do outreach, fundraising, and promotion. In short, this class provides
hands-on opportunities to practice every aspect of live theatre. Not the least
of which is the sense of ensemble that develops amongst the members of the
class, theatre majors and others.
Besides the ensemble experiences and
SPEW we also
book some wonderful workshops to augment the rest of the Theatre Department
curriculum. Extras that we can’t fit into our normal curriculum such as
fire-eating, or story-telling. Sometimes we hear folks like the host of
Blue’s Clues
or Tony Award-winning actress Karen Ziemba or CCSU alumni, or the gelin’
man, Greg Sims, talking about their careers. Or we might offer a workshop that
adds to what we offer in the classroom such as viewpoints or the Meisner
technique.
Get ready to have some serious fun.
Grading:
We
try to keep this as simple as possible. All students are required to generate
$20 for the Theatre Angels fund. There has been a lot of cynical reference to
this as “buying a grade.” But without this fund,
SPEW has no
budget. It’s a simple reality of theatre. 1% of Americans attends live theatre.
If you want to make or be a part of theatre, nobody’s gonna hand you a budget.
You’ve got to make it. If there’s no audience, there’s no point. Your grade will
be based--not only on your interaction with the ensemble during every class--but
also on your ability to make SPEW and the work of the Theatre Department’s
mainstage as visible and well-attended as possible. We only meet once a week and
so timely attendance at these meetings is the expectation. Your work within your
pod will also be assessed. What makes the grade? Have you done all that you can
to make the others’ work in this class and department as good as it can be?
The Pods:
Except for promotion, mainstage shows are no longer an aspect of this class.
Credit for work on a mainstage show is received through the TH 115
Play production
class. Everyone in TH 101 will be in one of three groups. One group will
meet with Josh outside of class and work on grass roots promotion. One group
will meet with Thom and do outreach. One group will meet with Sheila and provide
the support needed for
SPEW.
